Whalewatcher magazine

Check out this awesome issue of the American Cetacean Society’s magazine, called the Whalewatcher. The issue is called “Porpoises on Peril: the Vaquita and its Relatives,” which, as you might guess, specializes on the porpoises. You can read it here: Whalewatcher.

List

Good news: the Vaquita is near the top of a recently published list that is the international buzz in the nature world.

Bad news: the list is of the 100 most endangered species on earth.

It is no secret to us that the Vaquita is critically endangered, nor am I trying to make it one. If it is so endangered, than it might as well be on this newly-created list. Thankfully it is on the list, and conveniently near the top so people won’t get bored of the list before they get to the Vaquita. Here is the link to one site with the list: The Guardian, and the Vaquita is the 15th one down. My one complaint, however, is that besides being able to infer that it lives in the ocean, someone who doesn’t know about the Vaquita will not know that it’s even a porpoise. Aside from that, this list is good for publicity for the Vaquita and many other troubled species.

Reserve and Refuge

The Biosphere Reserve was created in 1993, and the Vaquita Refuge was created 2005. These two areas legally protect the Vaquita from gillnets, but they do not cover the entire range of the Vaquita. Along with that, the laws within these areas are very weakly enforced, resulting in much illegal fishing. It is therefore necessary for the Vaquita’s existence to expand and enforce the Biosphere Reserve and Vaquita Refuge.

4th report

When I suggested reading the 4th Report of CIRVA, I myself didn’t even read it. However, a few days ago, I thought, I might as well read it. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? Boy am I glad I forced down all 48 grueling pages. Not only was it the most detailed Vaquita paper I have ever read, it was the most optimistic. There is too much information in there for me to fully recap, but basically it states the Vaquita has a chance if the conservation process is accelerated. I strongly recommend reading it: http://www.vivavaquita.org/PDF/CIRVA2012.pdf. It actually is more fun than reading a novel.

First copy done

I just finished my first copy of my children’s book, “Vaquita.” Look for more updates soon. Also, my brother is doing a report on the Vaquita from my book. His teacher is the same one to whom I introduced the idea of a school fundraiser two years ago. Hopefully his report will refresh her interest and maybe the fundraiser idea. An idea is forming in my head about a Vaquita fundraiser (not the school one), and it might include chocolate bars. 🙂 Stay tuned.

The present

The present is an important time.

By now, the present is in the past.

And there is nothing you can change about the past.

However, the only time you can change the future

Is right now.
