José Hernàndez (whom Diane Glim commented about on a previous post) from Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Save the Whales, and ¡Viva Vaquita! teamed up to do a public service announcement about the Vaquita being broadcasted on radio stations in the Monterey, California area. You can listen to it here: http://www.savethewhales.org/vaquita_psa.html.

TravelSharkPix Winners
TravelSharkPix announced the winners of their charity hunt yesterday, but unfortunately Save the Whales didn’t win. On the bright side, one of the winners was Oceana, a non-profit organization devoted to protecting the oceans and their creatures, including the Vaquita. Hopefully Oceana gets many donations from this event, and the Vaquita gains some more popularity. You can donate by getting a TravelSharkPix account, then uploading your pictures. For the first 100 accepted photos, they will donate 10 cents to either Oceana, The Cheetah Conservation Fund, or People in Crisis United. From the 101st submitter and beyond, they will donate 25 cents! Click here to learn more about TravelSharkPix. You can check out the Oceana site here:
La Tienda
Check out the ¡Viva Vaquita! La Tienda at http://www.printfection.com/vivavaquita! This great store features a wide range of tops, mugs, mousepads, ornaments, hats, bags, and bottles with various ¡Viva Vaquita! logos and illustrations. Besides the wonderful quality of the products, all of the profits go to the Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Cetacean Society, a non-profit organization. This is the best way to donate, and the best way to buy Vaquita items. Happy shopping!

Vaquita: Last Chance for the Desert Porpoise
I recommend everyone should take 5 minutes to download the “Vaquita: Last Chance for the Desert Porpoise” movie on iTunes for free! Also found on vaquita.tv (Blogroll), it is an extremely informative movie about the Vaquita, filmed and narrated by Chris Johnson.
Whalefest
Join ¡Viva Vaquita! at Whalefest on Saturday, January 21 from 9 am-5 pm at Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey, California! They will be giving a special lecture about the Vaquita and showing the documentary “Vaquita: Last Chance for the Desert Porpoise”. Be sure to stop by the ¡Viva Vaquita!/American Cetacean Society Monterey Bay Chapter and Save The Whales booths to learn even more about the Vaquita! More information can be found at the link below. Even though I can’t attend (ahhh, the cost of traveling), anyone near or in Cali should head over for a great experience!

2 petitions
It is really important that you sign two petitions: the Vivavaquita petition, http://www.change.org/petitions/prevent-the-extinction-of-the-vaquita-porpoise-the-worlds-most-endangered-marine-mammal, and the Save the Whales petition, http://www.change.org/petitions/save-the-vaquita-porpoise-the-worlds-most-endangered-marine-mammal, on Change.org. To sign these petitions, you must simply click the link, fill out your information, and press the sign button. If you are already a Change.org member, just log in and sign. Both petitions only need a couple hundred more signatures, so PLEASE sign them and tell all your friends. If these petitions reach their goals, the Vaquita can be saved!
CEDO 2012
In recognition of the extremely critical situation of the Vaquita, CEDO is directing most of its 2012 fundraising efforts to the protection of this critically endangered species. Any purchases in the coming year will support local fishermen’s and CEDO’s cooperative efforts at reducing by-catch in the Northern Gulf, in strengthening public and social policies and practices to protect the Vaquita’s habitat, and in educating the public on this little porpoise. New research on the Vaquita will be published onto CEDO’s website soon: http://myemail.constantcontact.com/Happy-Holidays-from-CEDO.html?soid=1103804400006&aid=0kt8vw91kEA
‘Twas the night before V-mas
Christmas Special!
‘Twas the night before V-mas,
And all through the pod
Vaquita were gossiping,
With whispers and nods.
The fish were packed in the coral with care,
In hopes that St. Blue Whale would soon be there.
The calves all rested on the water’s surface,
But they couldn’t sleep because they were nervous.
The parents set out the croakers and milk,
And lay on their seabeds, softer than silk.
When up on the surface arose such a splash
That sounded like Narwhals in heated clash.
Papa V swam to the top like a jet.
And guess who was there? Guess whom he met?
St. Blue Whale, floating with a smirk.
Warm eyes and a smile, he couldn’t be a jerk.
He had eight antsy dolphins pulling his reins,
And a sack full of treats like seaweed canes.
He left some presents under the Christmas Reef,
And called to his dolphins, “Now Swimmer, now Spinner, now Breacher and Sleef,
On Logger, on Ringer, on Pinger and Turf!”
And St. Whale and his pod swam off in the surf.
