International Save the Vaquita Day 2020!

The big day is here! #ISTVD2020 is today, July 18, and this event is sure to be exciting and impactful. The event is completely virtual this year, and is centered around a live stream featuring many wonderful speakers, artists, and a presentation of the award-winning vaquita documentary Sea of Shadows. The live stream begins at 9:00 am PT, 12:00 pm ET, with the earlier content being kid-friendly, followed by more serious content in the afternoon. Below the feed you can find more information and ways to help.

The live stream can be found here: https://vaquita.mx/

You can help participate in this event in many ways, the best being in the following:

  • Share the live stream link on social media and through email, using the hashtags #SavetheVaquita and #4aPorpoise. Here are some sample posts you can use:

“We must #SavetheVaquita! Please visit vaquita.mx to learn more about this critically endangered marine mammal and how you can help! #4aPorpoise”

“The vaquita will be extinct soon unless the threat of gillnet fishing in its small range in Mexico is eliminated. The Mexican government must fully enforce its gillnet ban to prevent the species’ extinction. Everyone can help by not buying gillnet-caught seafood, boycotting Mexican shrimp, voting for conservation-minded leaders, contacting the Mexican government, and donating to environmental groups working to help the vaquita. See www.vivavaquita.org and vaquita.mx for more information. #SavetheVaquita #4aPorpoise”

  • Contact Mexican government officials through social media and let them know that they need to act decisively to enforce the ban on gillnet fishing. Here is sample message and the social media accounts of three top Mexican officials. You can also use vaquita.mx to send these messages with just one click.

“Don’t allow the tiny #vaquita porpoise to vanish on your watch. Step up your efforts, act now and #SaveTheVaquita! YOU are responsible for what happens next. Enforce the ban on gillnets in the vaquita’s range.”

#ISTVD2020 t-shirt campaign

International Save the Vaquita Day falls on July 18 this year, and will be conducted virtually to ensure safety for all involved. However, just because it is online doesn’t mean you can’t participate! Our annual t-shirt campaign has only 3 days left, and we need your support! Please consider purchasing this year’s t-shirt. All proceeds going to the Muskwa Club, Inc.’s vaquita conservation efforts, and it is a great way to spread the word about the plight of this species. We would love to see your selfies wearing the shirt on July 18 with the hashtags #SaveTheVaquita and #ISTVD2020!

Today is International Save the Vaquita Day 2018!

This is the biggest day of the year for our favorite critically endangered porpoise, and we need to make this one count more than ever. 20 or fewer vaquitas likely remain, but extinction is not an option. Please sign this brand new petition directed at the new president-elect of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). We need him to commit to saving the vaquita with even more dedication and fervor than his predecessors, because this really is the last chance.

And finally, please listen to this beautiful vaquita lullaby written by Matthew Mehan for his upcoming book. It inspires me even further to save this precious species.

New Vaquita art

Here is a poem that I wrote for an upcoming poetry competition focused on ocean pollution:

THE NETS WE FORGET

The dark gray sky casts its shadow on the sea,
The sea swells with the wind, whipping up froth.
Thunder booms among the rolling clouds;
Lightning flashes in the distance,
But underneath, it is calm.
The muffled sound of the storm above dances off the coral.
Small reef fish swarm in and out of nooks and crannies.
All seems fine at first, but there is something wrong here.
A ghost enters the scene.
A nearly invisible drifter.
A gillnet.
But this fishing net does not belong to anybody.
It has been abandoned,
But its job is not done.
This ghost still has lives to take.
First comes a shrimp,
A puny pink prawn:
Gone.
His life ends and is doomed to drift away,
Trapped forever.
Next is a fish.
A huge one at that.
He swims right into the net,
And in the blink of an eye,
The life leaves his body.
A little porpoise swims through the shallows,
Bubbles dancing down her side.
She’s teaching her baby how to fish.
They happen upon a juicy meal,
But as the mother darts towards the target,
She is struck by a web of death.
The fish they were chasing
Was already a victim.
The baby, terrified, watches as her mother writhes in agony.
And the ghost has taken yet another life.

International Save the Vaquita Day has become a huge event, and one that has been—and will continue to be—making a legitimate difference for the Vaquita and its survival. Showing the people and government of Mexico that the world cares about the Vaquita and appreciates their efforts to date will hopefully inspire them to follow through with their promises and actually save this species. To make ISTVD 2016 the biggest one yet, help ignite the buzz and donate to the event by buying a cool ISTVD 2016 t-shirt!

International Save the Vaquita Day tomorrow!

I want YOU

If you haven’t already heard, tomorrow (or today in some places), Saturday, July 12, is International Save the Vaquita Day. ISTVD is a day dedicated to protecting the innocent little Vaquita. The world has been rough to this petite porpoise, and tomorrow is a chance for us to start paying it back. So what will you be doing for International Save the Vaquita Day? Below is a list of confirmed venues for tomorrow. Please check out Facebook or email me at <gl.tamarin123@gmail.com> to find out what times the tables will be. If you can’t find out, a good bet is late morning, and most tables will last for at least a 3-4 hours. Please click here to spread the word, and here to sign VIVA Vaquita’s petition. For a lot more information on ISTVD, check out: https://vlogvaquita.com/international-save-the-vaquita-day-2014/. And if you can’t make it to one of these tables, there will be a Tweetstorm going on tomorrow; all you have to do is write a tweet that includes the hashtags “#SaveTheVaquita” or “#ISTVD” to help make them trending worldwide. If you want, you can check out @vlogvaquita for some pre-written Vaquita tweets that you can copy and paste for the Tweetstorm.

Thanks to everyone who plans on participating in ISTVD and a huge round of applause to all of the organizers!
