The Mexican government assembled a committee of international experts to assess the necessary methods to save the Vaquita. The International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA) previously met in 1997, 1999, and 2004. Members of CIRVA met again in February 2012 and reviewed progress of the Vaquita since the last meeting. The CIRVA recommendations are in this report:

The Vaquita population is still declining and is probably made up of under 200 individual Vaquitas.

Thanks for sharing this link with the Executive Summary and Full Report of the committee’s findings. It is a very sobering yet hopeful report. Some initial steps are being implemented to help save the Vaquita from extinction, but clearly, much more needs to be done. It appears as if there is a considerable amount of catastrophically damaging gillnet fishing still occurring in much of the Vaquitas small habitat. The population has dipped to fewer than 200 individuals and if the population decline continues, then soon there will be too few Vaquita for the species to survive and it will be lost forever. It is critical that we continue to raise awareness and support for the Vaquita lest too many people falsely believe that the efforts made to date are enough to save the species, because this is clearly not the case. Keep up the great work that you are doing with this blog young man. Your efforts are both impressive and vital. Thank you!
